Pat Metheny is a popular musician recognized by peers and critics alike as an innovative, indefatigable and incomparable jazz/rock guitarist and virtuoso. The 20-time Grammy® award winner in 12 different categories including Best Rock instrumental, Best Contemporary Jazz recording, Best Jazz Instrumental Solo and Best Instrument Composition brings his “incredible” Unity Group for a one-night special at The Mahaffey Theater.
Named “2012 Guitarist of the Year” in Downbeat’s Readers Poll, Metheny reinvented the traditional “jazz guitar” sound for a new generation of musicians, utilizing new technology, and he continues to evolve the improvisational – and sonic – potential of his instrument. Metheny has spent most of his life on tour, averaging between 120-240 shows a year since 1974.
His acclaimed Pat Metheny Group has won an unprecedented seven consecutive Grammies® for seven consecutive albums. His new Pat Metheny Unity Group with members Chris Potter, Ben Williams, Antonio Sanchez and Giulio Carmassi resulted from The Unity Band project. The project was a “life-changing” gig that Metheny didn’t want to end after the completion of the 2012 tour. A new recording by the Pat Metheny Unity Group will be released in February 2014.
Metheny has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Reich, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Milton Nascimento and David Bowie. His body of work includes compositions for solo guitar, electric and acoustic instruments, large orchestras and ballet pieces with settings ranging from modern jazz to rock to classical.
